Bernabe's Story

PaulinoBernabe

The International Crafts Exhibition, Minich

One of the rare top-tier guitar makers, still considered one of the greatest and most renowned living legends, hails from a famous family in Spain. Their instruments are the preferred choice for artists for concert performances and studio recordings.

Paulino Bernabe was born in Madrid on July 2, 1932. He studied classical guitar under Daniel Fortea, a student of Tárrega. Over the years, he developed a deep interest in guitar making. From being a guitarist, he transitioned into a luthier apprentice. In 1954, Bernabe joined the Ramírez workshop, eventually becoming the chief craftsman. This was around the same time Segovia began playing Ramírez guitars. In 1969, Bernabe left Ramírez to establish his own workshop in Madrid, Spain.

Bernabe developed his own unique internal bracing structure, which has significantly evolved since its inception. This intricate innovation resulted in a sweeter tone while maintaining the clarity and sharpness of sound.

In 1974, Bernabe was awarded the Gold Medal at The International Crafts Exhibition in Munich.

Bernabe guitars are known for their powerful tone, strong trebles, a wide range of tonal colors, and an exceptionally long sustain, which have become their signature.

Today, the second generation of Bernabe guitars continues to develop and refine their craftsmanship, producing instruments that uphold the highest standards in both artisan quality and attention to detail. Naturally, their prices have risen over time as well.

One notable artist, Thibaut Garcia, winner of the 2016 Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) Competition, has been playing a Bernabe Royal model for years and continues to do so today.
